Functional Diagnostic Nutrition ®

How We Can Help

I must get asked this question 15 times a day from prospective clients and the general population so I know there is an interest in what we do and how we can help.  I will break it down into two components with more of an emphasis on the latter.

Client number 1

This is the person who typically wants to lose weight and get into shape.   There are many derivatives of this but it usually revolves around losing fat, adding muscle and having strong cardiovascular health. They need guidance on nutrition, training programs, sleep, lifestyle modifications, stress reduction techniques, etc.  We provide this with or without the utilization of lab testing.  Depending on the client’s financial situation, we run the personalized panels that will give us the most pertinent data.  With this data, we can then tailor the programs accordingly.

Client number 2

This is the person with a more specific health issue or diagnosed disease.  These can range from thyroid problems, autoimmune conditions (celiac, lupus, crohn’s, rheumatoid arthritis, multiple sclerosis, type 1 diabetes, etc.), type 2 diabetics, adrenal fatigue/stress, anxiety, depression, neurological disorders, Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth (SIBO) and many other gut and brain disorders.  We typically run a few labs that determine what is causing the problem and then address it with a very specific protocol.  There is much more personalized in depth analysis as they have been suffering with these issues for years or decades.  They typically have not been able to get the help they require and are looking for alternative options.  This is relatively new area of practice around the world especially in Canada.  Many people are unaware that these conditions can be reversed or improved dramatically where they don’t have to suffer in pain anymore.

If this sounds like you or anyone else you know, please feel free to each out to our team.  We are always here to help.  Have a great day.

Have you ever wondered what it would feel like to have a full night’s sleep, go through a day without a headache, full of energy in the morning, afternoon and evening?  Do you suffer from allergies, acne and blood sugar problems?  Do you find yourself feeling depressed, emotionally fragile or anxious?   Do you have inflammation, pain, indigestion and bloating?  Have you ever experienced low sex drive, menstrual (not you gentlemen) problems or weight gain around the waist or buttocks?  I ask these questions because many people experience symptoms related to systemic dysfunctions but can’t receive the proper help to alleviate them.  They are frustrated with traditional care and have nowhere else to turn.  Well, I am here to tell you that you do.  Functional Diagnostic Nutrition ® (FDN) is an emerging field and growing body of work that bridges the gap between medical care and self care.  I want to outline some testing procedures that I can administer with you to seek the underlying malfunction that is causing your discomfort.  I have run these on multiple clients (including myself) and I can’t stress (pardon the pun) how effective they have been.  For me personally, these lab results have uncovered dysfunctions that were not revealed by standard medical testing.

Lab Test #1 (DUTCH Test for Adrenals)

The DUTCH Complete is the most advanced hormone test, offering an extensive profile of sex and adrenal hormones and melatonin, along with their metabolites, to identify symptoms of hormonal imbalances.

The results include:

• Analysis of 35 different hormones: estrogen, progesterone, testosterone, DHEA-S, and cortisol along with their metabolites

• Daily free cortisol patterns to provide insight into adrenal insufficiency or symptoms of chronic stress

• Graphical representation of results and embedded video tutorials to assist in the hormone assessment to share with your medical provider

• DUTCH OATs: Oxidative stress marker – 8-Hydroxy-2-deoxyguanosine (8-OHdG), melatonin (6-OHMS), and six organic acid tests (OATs) including markers for vitamin B12 (methylmalonate), vitamin B6 (xanthurenate), glutathione (pyroglutamate), dopamine (homovanillate), norepinephrine/epinephrine (vanilmandelate), and serotonin (5-hydroxyindoleacetate).

Lab #2  Viome Gut Panel

Gut Microbiome Composition

Every living organism produces RNA molecules from their DNA. By sequencing all of the RNA in your stool, we can identify and quantify all of the living microorganisms in your gut (bacteria, viruses, bacteriophages, archaea, fungi, yeast, parasites, and more) at the species and strain level. The end result? A higher resolution view of your gut microbiome than has ever been available before.

Lab #3  Spectracell Cardio Metabolic Panel

Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death. Standard cholesterol tests can miss that YOU are at risk. SpectraCell’s CardioMetabolic test offers a clinically relevant evaluation to help define risk for atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD), progression toward Type 2 Diabetes, and inflammation. It includes SpectraCell’s Advanced Lipoprotein Particle Profile™ Plus (LPPTM Plus), which measures lipoprotein size and density; cardiovascular risk stratification; and also includes triglycerides and traditional cholesterol screening. Each patient is assigned a CardioMetabolic Risk Assessment, which is an indication of your risk (Low, Moderate or High) for developing cardiovascular disease, including stroke and diabetes. In addition, the Type 2 Diabetes Risk Assessment is an estimate of your risk of developing Type 2 Diabetes.  These check points help patients understand that not just one factor, but rather a constellation of risk factors, contribute to the genesis and progression toward poor blood sugar control and/or ASCVD.  Results of testing allow doctors to know when guidance, educational referral, or treatment is necessary. Key components of the CardioMetabolic Risk Panel are listed below.

Lab Test # 4 (BH 101 for Liver Function, Toxicity within the body and your ability to Digest Protein)

This lab measures a patient’s urinary bile acid sulfates (UBAS), which is a direct indicator of liver congestion and a window into its efficiency at handling toxins and other metabolically undesirable compounds (MUC). This test also evaluates lipid peroxide levels, which represent how much “oxidative stress” (toxicity) is present in the body. The final test in this section is for bacterial breakdown of protein into amino acids.  How well does your body digest protein for fuel sources, muscle development and body tissue repair!

Lab Test #5 (ARL Mineral and Nutrient Testing)

The Analytical Research Labs HTMA (Profile 1) provides insight on mineral and toxic metal levels and how well the body is able to currently excrete toxic metals.

MARKERS INCLUDED ON THIS TEST:

Calcium, Magnesium, Sodium, Potassium, Iron, Copper, Manganese, Zinc, Chromium, Selenium, Phosphorus, Nickel, Cobalt, Molybdenum, Lithium, Boron, Lead, Mercury, Cadmium, Arsenic, Aluminum.
Provides a basic Multi-Element Laboratory Assay reporting the patient test results for macro and micro minerals, toxic metals and significant ratios. A chart is provided that identifies the patient/client information and graphically illustrates the test results.

Lab Test #6 ( Comprehensive Thyroid Testing)

The SpectraCell Laboratories Comprehensive Thyroid Panel provides insight on thyroid function.  This is extremely important as many patients with thyroid conditions have an autoimmune component.

MARKERS INCLUDED ON THIS TEST:
  • TSH
  • Free T3
  • Free T4
  • T4 Total
  • Thyroglobulin
  • Thyroxine-Binding Globulin
  • Anti-Thyroglobulin Ab
