Three Supplements for Children

1. Cod Liver Oil or Fish Oils

Cod liver oil or Fish Oils are used to boost consumption of omega 3 fatty acids. Foods that contain omega oils are fish and nuts.  Egg yolks are also great sources of omega 3’s and the oils are excellent for additional brain development in young children.

Cod and Fish oils are laced with antioxidants and vitamins A & D, and they are a good source of omega oils.   They protect the cell membrane, create healthy hormones and help keep inflammation in check.

Cod liver oil is one of the toughest pills to get kids to take but it makes a difference in their mood (much calmer and relaxed) and concentration when they take it.  You can get it as a gel and add it to smoothies or fruits.  There are also capsules of these oils but many kids can’t swallow them.  Seafood is another healthy source of cod liver oil.

2. Probiotics

Probiotics help keep our guts balanced with beneficial organisms. This promotes good health as the healthy gut flora help to keep harmful organisms in check, assist in digesting foods appropriately, breakdown toxins correctly, aid in manufacturing vitamins B and K2 for us, and aid us in mineral and nutrient absorption.   Healthy gut flora has been shown to have a positive impact on the immune system from before baby is born until well after he/she comes into this world.  A natural birth also assists in shaping the child’s microbiome.  We know that the immune system is vital to having healthy, thriving children.

You used to be able to get probiotics from healthy vegetables.   Vegetables were not irradiated and sterilized so they contained soil based probiotic strains.  Foods were often fermented to preserve them, creating a wide variety of native probiotic strains, and we didn’t overuse sanitizers and antibiotics, which can alter gut bacteria.  Lifestyle, medications, toxicity and alcohol all play a major role in changing the “garden” which is your gut.

3. Minerals (Magnesium and Trace Minerals)

Magnesium has been advantageous for our family and it also helps my kids sleep well. You can spray it on or use it in the bath to create a calming and relaxing effect.   Another easy way to give kids a magnesium boost is to add about 1/2 cup of epsom salts to their bath water so they can absorb it through their skin.  We do this every other night for our children.  Just like vitamins, minerals help your body grow, develop, and stay healthy. The body uses minerals to perform many different functions (building strong bones to transmitting nerve impulses).  Some minerals are even used to make hormones or maintain a normal heartbeat.  These micronutrients are vital. The two kinds of minerals are macrominerals and trace minerals. The macromineral group is made up of calcium, phosphorus, magnesium, sodium, potassium and sulfur.  A trace of something means that there is only a little of it.  So even though your body needs trace minerals, it needs just a tiny bit of each one.  Trace minerals includes iron, manganese, copper, iodine, zinc, cobalt, fluoride, and selenium.
